Target Name
MTTP
Target Full Name
Microsomal triglyceride transfer protein large subunit
Target Function
Catalyzes the transport of triglyceride, cholesteryl ester, and phospholipid between phospholipid surfaces. Required for the assembly and secretion of plasma lipoproteins that contain apolipoprotein B. May be involved in regulating cholesteryl ester biosynthesis in cells that produce lipoproteins.
Target Involvement
Abetalipoproteinemia (ABL)
Target Subcellular Location
Endoplasmic reticulum. Golgi apparatus.
Target Tissue Specificity
Liver and small intestine. Also found in ovary, testis and kidney.
Target Synonyms
ABL; Microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (large polypeptide 88kDa); Microsomal triglyceride transfer protein 88kD; Microsomal triglyceride transfer protein; Microsomal triglyceride transfer protein large subunit; MTP; MTP large subunit; MTP_HUMAN; MTTP; Transfer RNA, mitochondrial, proline; tRNA-Pro, mitochondrial
Target Background
MTP encodes the large subunit of the heterodimeric microsomal triglyceride transfer protein. Protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) completes the heterodimeric microsomal triglyceride transfer protein, which has been shown to play a central role in lipoprotein assembly. Mutations in MTP can cause abetalipoproteinemia.
