Background Information
  • Uniprot Id

    P15538

  • Target Species

    Human

  • Target Name

    CYP11B1

  • Target Full Name

    Cytochrome P450 11B1, mitochondrial

  • Target Function

A cytochrome P450 monooxygenase involved in the biosynthesis of adrenal corticoids. Catalyzes the hydroxylation of carbon hydrogen bond at 11-beta position of 11-deoxycortisol and 11-deoxycorticosterone/21-hydroxyprogesterone yielding cortisol or corticosterone, respectively. Mechanistically, uses molecular oxygen inserting one oxygen atom into a substrate and reducing the second into a water molecule. Two electrons are provided by NADPH via a two-protein mitochondrial transfer system comprising flavoprotein FDXR (adrenodoxin/ferredoxin reductase) and nonheme iron-sulfur protein FDX1 or FDX2 (adrenodoxin/ferredoxin).

  • Target Involvement

    Adrenal hyperplasia 4 (AH4); Hyperaldosteronism, familial, 1 (HALD1)

  • Target Subcellular Location

Mitochondrion inner membrane; Peripheral membrane protein.

  • Target Protein Families

    Cytochrome P450 family

  • Target Research Area

    Cancer

  • Target Synonyms

  • Target Background

This gene encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. The cytochrome P450 proteins are monooxygenases which catalyze many reactions involved in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids and other lipids. This protein localizes to the mitochondrial inner membrane and is involved in the conversion of progesterone to cortisol in the adrenal cortex. Mutations in this gene cause congenital adrenal hyperplasia due to 11-beta-hydroxylase deficiency. Transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been noted for this gene.
