Background Information
  • Uniprot Id

    O00204

  • Target Species

    Human

  • Target Name

    SULT2B1

  • Target Full Name

    Sulfotransferase 2B1

  • Target Function

Sulfotransferase that utilizes 3'-phospho-5'-adenylyl sulfate (PAPS) as sulfonate donor to catalyze the sulfate conjugation. Responsible for the sulfation of cholesterol. Catalyzes sulfation of the 3beta-hydroxyl groups of steroids, such as, pregnenolone and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Preferentially sulfonates cholesterol, while it has also significant activity with pregnenolone and DHEA. Plays a role in epidermal cholesterol metabolism and in the regulation of epidermal proliferation and differentiation.; Sulfonates pregnenolone but not cholesterol.

  • Target Involvement

Ichthyosis, congenital, autosomal recessive 14 (ARCI14)

  • Target Subcellular Location

    Cytoplasm, cytosol. Microsome. Nucleus.

  • Target Protein Families

    Sulfotransferase 1 family

  • Target Tissue Specificity

Expressed in the stratum granulosum-stratum corneum junction in the skin (at protein level). Expressed highly in placenta, prostate and trachea and lower expression in the small intestine and lung.

    Cardiovascular

  • Target Synonyms

    Alcohol sulfotransferase; EC 2.8.2.2; HSST2; Hydroxysteroid sulfotransferase 2; ST2B1; ST2B1_HUMAN; Sulfotransferase 2B1; Sulfotransferase family cytosolic 2B member 1; SULT2B1; SULT2B1a; SULT2B1b

  • Target Background

Sulfotransferase enzymes catalyze the sulfate conjugation of many hormones, neurotransmitters, drugs, and xenobiotic compounds. These cytosolic enzymes are different in their tissue distributions and substrate specificities. The gene structure (number and length of exons) is similar among family members. This gene sulfates dehydroepiandrosterone but not 4-nitrophenol, a typical substrate for the phenol and estrogen sulfotransferase subfamilies. Two alternatively spliced variants that encode different isoforms have been described.
