Background Information
  • Uniprot Id

    P12104

  • Target Species

    Human

  • Target Name

    FABP2

  • Target Full Name

    Fatty acid-binding protein, intestinal

  • Target Function

FABP are thought to play a role in the intracellular transport of long-chain fatty acids and their acyl-CoA esters. FABP2 is probably involved in triglyceride-rich lipoprotein synthesis. Binds saturated long-chain fatty acids with a high affinity, but binds with a lower affinity to unsaturated long-chain fatty acids. FABP2 may also help maintain energy homeostasis by functioning as a lipid sensor.

  • Target Subcellular Location

    Cytoplasm.

  • Target Protein Families

Calycin superfamily, Fatty-acid binding protein (FABP) family

  • Target Tissue Specificity

Expressed in the small intestine and at much lower levels in the large intestine. Highest expression levels in the jejunum.

  • Target Research Area

    Cardiovascular

  • Target Synonyms

FABP 2; FABP2; FABPI; FABPI_HUMAN; Fatty acid binding protein 2 intestinal; Fatty acid binding protein; Fatty acid binding protein intestinal; Fatty acid-binding protein 2; Fatty acid-binding protein; I FABP; I-FABP; IFABP; intestinal; intestinal FABP; Intestinal fatty acid binding protein 2; Intestinal-type fatty acid-binding protein; MGC133132; OTTHUMP00000163925

  • Target Background

The protein encoded by this gene is an intracellular fatty acid-binding protein that participates in the uptake, intracellular metabolism, and transport of long-chain fatty acids. The encoded protein is also involved in the modulation of cell growth and proliferation. This protein binds saturated long-chain fatty acids with high affinity, and may act as a lipid sensor to maintain energy homeostasis.
